April 18, 2010: Dinner with Friends

As a birthday gift to Teja and Barb (they fall within a couple of days together) I made a meal for them and for a few others. Menu was:

  • Asparagus Soup with Sour Cream and Croutons
  • Rack of Lamb with Mustard-Bread Crumb Crust
  • Carrots E’Luvetee´ (carrots steamed in their own juices)
  • Potatoes Dauphinois
  • Spinach Salad with quarters of small potatoes, bacon bits, toasted walnuts, crumbled blue cheese, and balsamic vinegar and walnut oil vinaigrette

Dinner timing is always critical. Even though I rarely prepare meat (and never eat it as I’m a vegetarian) I could tell from my restaurant experience that the lamb wasn’t done as I took it out to rest (an extremely rare piece of meat is too “rubbery”). To double-check, I cut into one rack and sure enough…the meat was very pink. I figure Teja and Barb’s oven is off about 50°F! So the meat had to go back in at 425°F for another 10 minutes and then rest for at least 10 minutes more! Usually, this pause in dinner is pretty disastrous, but my friends were regaled by guest Micki Selvitella’s stories about meeting fellow actors wherever she travels and tips on how to avoid being a grizzly bear’s hors d’oeuvre! Susan Norton also recounted her own “Fear and Loathing in Tampa” that had us all in stitches! Susan also showed us her “Easter Parade” video, shot in Tampa. Beautiful. Also present was my “best customer” Dan Winkler who showed us the animation of how maybe it’s not always  the best to “win the day and the girl”.  Carolyn Palermino was happily there with her good company, as well, to sample her favorite carrots, made just for her!
